Here's some groovy old-time religion from the 1979 album "Slow Train Coming." "When You Gonna Wake Up" is a variation on the old preacher question of when are you going to get right with God? Before it's too late, hopefully.
1. God keeps his promises. He'll honor your dreams, but you know, "in order to dream you gotta still be asleep." When you gonna wake up?
2. Counterfeit philosphies entrap your thoughts. Karl Marx is one such trapper. Henry Kissinger's another.
3. Innocent men in jail, insane asylums at capacity, quacks dealing useless drugs that definitely won't fix your spiritual ailment.
4. Intemperate men, women who talk too much, evil rich seduce the poor, the evil young seduce the old.
5. In church: adultery. In school: pornography. In power: gangsters. In the state house: lawbreakers.
6. Spiritual advisors and gurus: instant inner peace, as long as you follow their instructions (and pay them).
7. My favorite line in this song: "Do you ever wonder just what God requires? You think He’s just an errand boy to satisfy your wandering desires?"
8. Money is not eternal. Time is money? Your life is worth its weight in gold?
9. Jesus let himself be crucified for you. Do you even know why?
